If this is for real, I will hold off upgrading to 10.3.9, which I planned to do later today. On the other hand, I’ running the stock JDK and not a developer release, so maybe this doesn’t apply.

I should have made my blog entry more clear: this is a sporadic problem that I think happens only if non-standard Apple Developer Java versions are installed - even then, this is a rare problem.
I just added a PS to my blog entry to hopefully make this more clear.

This is a sporadic problem but it is not related to non-standard Apple Developer Java versions and is quite common. The easiest fix seems to be to manually install Security Update 2005-002 again. It’s available from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2005002macosx1034orlater.html
It is however important to note that Apple have not issued any statement regarding this problem and this solution may cause other unintended side effects though so far I haven’t heard of any problems.

Whenever updating OS X, always choose the Combo updater… I always do so and have never had any problems since I started using them. Yeah, they are much bigger downloads, but worth it.
